Colorado Attorney General John Suthers signing autographs in a 5th grade classThroughout our 14 years teaching young Americans about the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, Liberty Day has partnered with a number of service clubs and organizations to recruit Americans across the country to visit 5th and 6th grade classes and teach the kids about the contents of the Constitution.

The beauty of Liberty Day’s Volunteer Initiatives lies in the fact that these students do not typically experience visits from outside speakers. By an attorney, elected official, service club member, or anyone else taking the time to talk to the kids, it spices things up for their learning experience and really underscores for the kids the importance of the documents they’re learning about.

Here it’s not just their teachers telling them about something from 230 years ago—it’s someone else who cares enough to come in and engage them in the learning process. Want to open up the hearts and minds of young people to what it means to be an American? This is how you do it.

Liberty Day has had a range of exciting and successful experiences with partner organizations whose members participated in our Volunteer Initiatives program.

Most recently, Liberty Day partnered with the New Mexico Bar Association to engage member attorneys in the project for Constitution Day 2009, September 17. In the end, 150 NM Bar Association lawyers introduced over 6,000 5th graders to the Constitution using Liberty Day’s Complete Education Package—the kids and teachers loved it!

“I feel it enhanced student learning because it offered a real life connection. They were able to see (through the lawyer’s career work) why the Constitution is important and why it makes the U.S. unique.” –Erin Northen, teacher

“They were very receptive – it was fun for them to have a visitor come and teach them about the Constitution.” –Theresa M. Maya, teacher

The response the New Mexico Bar got from the teachers was extraordinary, beyond what was originally anticipated. Teachers just couldn’t wait to bring in a volunteer to talk to their students!

We have orchestrated this and similar programs with elected officials, Optimist and Lions Clubs, colleges and universities, and others over the years, and the response we get from everyone involved has been extraordinary!

Gather up the patriots in your group. Open up the hearts and minds of kids to what it means to be an American. Get involved with Liberty Day’s Volunteer Initiatives today!

When we work with other organizations in the effort to open up the hearts and minds of kids to our nation’s foundations, we’re partners in the effort. Liberty Day knows that everyone we work with has a passion for this country and everything it has to offer. We understand your commitment to certain ultimate goals and objectives that your organization has developed. That is why we believe in forming and cultivating a partnership with your group to make each and every program a noteable success that everyone involved is eager to return to.

As such, Liberty Day doesn’t try to micromanage your operation or even stay in constant contact with individual members or chapters directly unless you want us to. You know the wants, needs, drives, and passions of your members and how your organization/chapters operate better than anyone else. That’s why we let our partners take the lead.

In short, you coordinate the project and purchase the materials. Participating volunteers typically pay the organization a fixed amount that helps cover the cost. Liberty Day supplies the resources to each individual volunteer, helps out with the assessment process, and provides other necessary assistance to our partners. Liberty Day’s Volunteer Initiatives is a wonderful, unique way to give back to your community by mobilizing individual members of your club or organization to teach young students about the essentials of this country.
