Throughout our 14 years teaching young Americans about the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, Liberty Day has partnered with a number of service clubs and organizations to recruit Americans across the country to visit 5th and 6th grade classes and teach the kids about the contents of the Constitution.
The beauty of Liberty Day’s Volunteer Initiatives lies in the fact that these students do not typically experience visits from outside speakers. By an attorney, elected official, service club member, or anyone else taking the time to talk to the kids, it spices things up for their learning experience and really underscores for the kids the importance of the documents they’re learning about.
Here it’s not just their teachers telling them about something from 230 years ago—it’s someone else who cares enough to come in and engage them in the learning process. Want to open up the hearts and minds of young people to what it means to be an American? This is how you do it.
